Crowns at Dental World

Crowns are orthopedic constructions that fully cover the destroyed tooth or an implant and effectively restore the teeth' aesthetics. Often, patients are recommended to have crowns to remove teeth defects, make changes, improve the shape of the tooth, or protect the tooth from future destruction. Despite the local renovation of teeth, crowns are used as a base for the placement of bridges when several teeth are missed next to each other.

Artificial teeth should not be visually identifiable. This can be done when two main rules are compiled: the crown should be placed by a professional, and the construction itself should be from a single ceramic piece.

What is Better: Emax, Zirconia, Ceramics, or Metal Ceramics? What is More Reliable, and What is More Pretty?

  • Low-temperature ceramics looks best on anterior teeth. It is thinner, more see-through and allows to create any shades. This is the most expensive material used to produce the most beautiful and natural-looking crowns or veneers. It requires a minimal grinding of teeth.
  • Emax is one of the types of ceramics. It is stronger and requires more grinding. We make crowns from Emax when increased tooth abrasion is present, as it is better at coping with the load. But Emax is not reliable enough for crowns on chewing teeth as it can crack.
  • Zirconia dioxide is an excellent material.  It is strong, aesthetical, and has a good effect on the gums and does not serve as a growing media for bacteria. It is best to have zirconia crowns on chewing teeth. We use zirconia in increased teeth abrasion, bruxism when there is a need to raise the bite or when a crown is needed on an implant. The color and texture are controlled by covering it with ceramics from the outside.
  • For large bridges (from 4 teeth), it is best to use metal ceramics, as metal is better at amortization than strong zirconia or fragile ceramics. It requires strong grinding of teeth.

Metal ceramics requires the highest rate of teeth grinding. Low-temperature ceramics required the least grinding. However, the rate of grinding depends on the primary and desired tooth color. And, of course, on the level of tooth destruction. Most importantly, the quality of restoration depends on the dental technician's level and not on the ceramics brand! The material is chosen, looking at the situation and the goals.
