Most people nowadays feel uncomfortable about going to the dentist. Based on many years of experience, Dr. Joe Morabit has developed specific treatment algorithms for various situations to minimize the risks and duration of surgical intervention.

Complex Tooth Extraction

Modern dentistry has achieved remarkable breakthroughs in recent decades. However, in some cases, tooth extraction is the only solution. Two types of extractions can be performed. Simple tooth extractions do not typically cause complications. It takes a few days for the gum tissue to heal, and stitches are not necessary.

A complex dental extraction involves surgical intervention. The procedure is more complicated, requiring more time and preparation.

Indications for a Complex Tooth Extraction

  • the wisdom tooth has not fully erupted or completely hidden underneath the gum
  • a wisdom tooth is misaligned or embedded in the cheek
  • molars with multiple roots (more than 3)
  • the root of a tooth is severely curved, bent inward, or damaged
  • the root of a tooth had become fused to the jaw bone
  • severe inflammatory process, cyst or fistula
  • heavily damaged or decayed tooth
  • a tooth with a large dental filling may not withstand the pressure of the forceps during removal

Our dentists are trained to perform any type of complex dental extraction, even if you were denied previously by other clinics.

Preparing for a Complex Tooth Extraction

Dental World East Cobb Location Services

Before performing an extraction, Dr. Joe Morabit conducts a consultation which includes a thorough oral checkup and dental X-ray examination of the tooth that has to be removed. This is an important stage for the outcome of the surgery since it largely depends on the accuracy of the diagnosis. According to diagnostic results, Dr. Joe evaluates the situation, assessing the number, size, and shape of the roots, as well as their relationship with the mandibular canal and the maxillary sinus floor. Based on these data, he creates a surgical treatment plan and selects surgical instruments. If the patient has inflammation in the oral cavity, antibiotics should be given within 24 hours before the scheduled procedure.

It is critical for people with diabetes to inform the doctor about their condition. In this case, the doctor will check blood glucose levels before and after the operation. This is of particular importance since diabetic patients have a higher risk of inflammation and slower wound healing. Performing tooth extraction on patients with high blood pressure requires similar preparations. If blood pressure increases significantly after the surgery, it should be lowered immediately with medication.

To make sure healing progresses smoothly, patients with diabetes and hypertension should visit the doctor 1-2 times to monitor the process.

Recovery after a Complex Tooth Extraction

After a tooth is removed, it leaves a hole that will be gradually filled in with the new tissue.

Stages of Gum Healing

  • formation of a blood clot (within 2-4 hours after extraction)
  • transformation of the blood clot into granulation tissue (after 3-4 days)
  • bone formation (after 1-2 weeks)

Recovery from wisdom tooth removal can take up to a month. This is due to the unusual structure of the root system that is atypical in shape and size. In fact, wisdom tooth removal is the most traumatic dental procedure. Sometimes tooth roots cannot be completely removed.

The total time for gums to be healed after tooth extraction will depend on the extent of tissue damage caused by surgery. If the procedure was complicated and required dental sutures, the pain may last up to a week. Sutures are usually removed no later than 7 days.

Side Effects After a Complex Tooth Extraction

Dental World East Cobb Location Services

  • Pain

One of the normal side effects following a tooth extraction is pain. When the anesthesia wears off, you may experience painful sensations in the area of the extracted tooth. It can cause intense pain. In this case, dentists recommend taking painkillers.

It is normal to have an aching, nagging, or throbbing type of pain. The pain should steadily decrease within 2-4 days.

Patients should carefully monitor their condition during the first week after tooth extraction and consult a doctor at the slightest suspicion of developing complications.

  • Bleeding

The blood clot that forms after a tooth removal prevents getting blood from the tooth socket to the oral cavity. Besides, it begins the healing process. In some cases, the dentist places a special absorbable sponge on the extraction spot. However, taking solid foods or touching the wounded area may initiate bleeding. If the bleeding is severe and does not stop on its own, you should seek immediate medical attention.

  • Swelling

A certain amount of swelling is normal after tooth extraction. Minor swelling is a frequent reaction. But if you notice severe pain and an increase in swelling, these signs may indicate the development of inflammation. This may occur if the patient accidentally damages the blood clot that formed at the site of tooth extraction after the surgery. The hole remains open and cannot prevent bacteria from entering the area. You should not hesitate to contact the dentist as it can cause serious consequences for your oral health. The doctor will perform a thorough examination, clean the wound, apply antiseptics and prescribe antibiotics, if necessary.

Severe swelling that affects not only the gums but also the cheeks requires an instant visit to the dental office. Swelling in the cheek is usually caused by severe inflammation and the formation of pus. If the condition is not treated promptly, it may lead to additional complications.

  • Fever

If you have a fever after surgical extraction, you should contact your doctor immediately. The presence of a high body temperature suggests wound infection. In some cases, it is a sign of gum inflammation. Fever may represent the development of serious complications. At this point, you need to visit the dentist's office to clear out the pus, disinfect it with antiseptic treatment and get a prescription for antibiotics.

Recommendations after Complex Tooth Extraction

  • Avoid sticky or chewy foods.
  • Eat soft foods that won't irritate the wound.
  • Do not take any medications that could interfere with normal blood clotting.
  • Refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol for a while.
  • Brush your teeth carefully.
  • Do not rinse your mouth after the tooth extraction procedure. It can disturb the formation of a blood clot or damage the already formed one.

Dr. Joe will further explain to each patient post-operative recommendations for the next several days of the recovery. Patients should follow all the guidelines in order to avoid certain unpleasant outcomes.

Treatment of the Root Canals Inflammation

Treatment of the Root Canals. Dental World Clinic

A root canal is a hollow section within the root of a tooth. It contains the pulp with its bundle of blood vessels and nerves. The tooth receives nutrition through the blood vessels. While nerve endings allow us to feel pressure when chewing food or pain caused by dental trauma and cavities. If root canal treatment is completed incorrectly, the patient may experience chronic pain and inflammation.

The most difficult root canal procedures include.

  • Root canal treatment for front teeth. Most front teeth have one canal. However, it is usually curved and difficult to reach with tools. We have the expertise in dealing with such cases.
  • Root canal treatment for wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth can have more than 5 canals, creating a branching system. Even dental X-rays do not always show the exact number of canals that have to be filled.

Moreover, the location of wisdom teeth makes it difficult to perform a successful root canal treatment. Providing such dental services is one of the major focus areas of Dental World East Cobb Location.

Root Canal Infection Symptoms

Inflammation of root canals often causes minor pain or discomfort. It can even go unnoticed. But some patients may experience more pronounced symptoms.

  • Toothache or Tooth Pain

An infected tooth may start to hurt when eating solid foods or brushing teeth. It is usually a short-term pain that goes away on its own.
Besides, root canal infection may bother you at night. The pain can be constant, throbbing. It is also known to adversely affect sleep quality and duration.

  • Increased Tooth Sensitivity

The sensitivity of tooth enamel is one of the main symptoms of infected root canals. Tooth pain is often triggered by cold, hot, sweet drinks and foods.

  • Swelling of the Gums

The gum near the infected root canal tooth may become red, sore, and swollen.

Preparing for Root Canal Treatment

The number of dental visits required to complete root canal treatment depends directly on the stage of the disease, whether it is remission or exacerbation. The course of treatment is also influenced by the dentist’s treatment planning techniques.

Root canal therapy often requires a couple of treatment stages and several appointments. A dental filling cannot be placed until the inflammatory process is treated. Thus, you will need to visit your dentist several times.

Common Symptoms after Root Canal Treatment

Dental treatment tends to cause dull pain when biting down or applying pressure. Discomfort following a filling can last up to 10 days. However, it also depends on the patient’s individual sensitivity to pain. It is allowed to take painkillers to alleviate the pain.

If you experience fever, facial swelling, or severe throbbing pain after root canal treatment, it is best to consult your dentist immediately.

Extensive Caries Treatment

Dental World East Cobb Location Services

Deep caries can lead to severe dental damage, creating deep cavities that reach the root canal. One tooth can have several carious lesions. This triggers severe pain reaction as the disease reaches the part of the tooth where the nerve endings are located.

Extensive caries are often accompanied by bad breath, pain and discomfort when chewing food, and digestive problems.

Complex Dental Implant Cases

Our experienced dental professionals can perform successful dental implant placement even if a patient has a higher risk of implant failure. Many clients choose our services after receiving refusals in other clinics.

The following cases can be classified as complex dental implant treatments.

  • Complete absence of teeth (complete adentia). Restoration of a complete dentition requires from 4 to 12 implants. The doctor may also suggest zygomatic implants for patients who lack sufficient bone in their upper jaw. These are longer implants that are anchored in the zygomatic bone of the upper jaw.
  • Insufficient bone volume for a solid fixation of implants. People with severe bone loss can receive dental implants. This process is a reliable way of restoring teeth if performed correctly. Our clinic offers two options that add volume and density to the jawbone - bone grafting or the sinus lift technique.
  • Implantation of the upper teeth in close proximity to the maxillary sinuses or the trigeminal nerve.
  • Gum disease that lead to infection of the attachment apparatus of the teeth, loosening of teeth, and tooth loss. Gum disease must be treated before dental implant placement. This procedure requires good gingival health.

Dental implant technology is one of the most effective tooth replacement options to date. The process of receiving implant-supported dentures does not require the grinding of adjacent teeth. It completely restores the function and aesthetics of the dentition and provides patients with a long-lasting solution.

The goal of Dental World East Cobb Location is to provide high-quality medical services with precise diagnosis and individualized treatment. We are always happy to see you in our clinic!
